Winter Break books

January 4, 2009 by · No Comments · Interesting Books

We’ve received a bunch of new books from Pinellas County Referrendum funds. I brought home a few to read during the winter break.I had a great time! Let me tell you about a few of the highlights:

So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane

I have to admit that I have been spoiled by a larger format book and didn’t want to enjoy this one only due to its size. I couldn’t help myself, though! I thoroughly enjoyed this small book about a young girl who has been bullied at school who stumbles upon a “How to” book in the library. It looks to be one of those “Choose a career that is right for you” kind of books about becoming a wizard. She meets up with a boy who has stumbled upon the same title and they find themselves battling evil and saving life as we know it. I enjoyed it and would definitely read “Deep Wizardry” the second book in the Young Wizards series.

Time Stops for No Mouse by Michael Hoeye
This was kind of a fun book. The main character Hermux Tantamoq, a watchmaker who happens to be a mouse, finds that his quiet life may not be as satisfying as once thought. When an adventurous aviator, Linka Perflinger, steps through his door and into his heart, Hermux life changes. He finds himself hiding behind corners and sifting through clues to try to save Ms Perflinger, the beautiful mouse he can’t even prove is missing. This also is the first in a series (the Hermux Tantamoq Adventures) and I would also look forward to other books in this series…. It was fun!

Schooled by Gordon Korman
Capricorn “Cap” Anderson has spent his entire life (all 14 years of it) living with his grandmother, Rain. They live on several acres of farmland, grow their own crops, tie dye their own clothes and live off the land. Rain has been Cap’s only teacher. When Rain falls from an apple tree and into a rehab center, Cap lands into Claverage Middle School. Cap knows nothing about the culture of today’s youth and Zack Powers, the big man on campus, sees Cap as fresh meat. Zack takes advantage of Cap’s niavete and elects him to be the class president, a spot usually reserved for the biggest outcast of the eighth grade class. Everyone gets educated, some in ways they didn’t expect. This was an interesting view of Middle School and an insightful view of teen culture from a VERY different perspective.

I’ll post more in the next day or two. Look forward to information on Savvy, Leven Thumps, and The Last Dragon in the next post. For now, thanks for listening.

Hello Readers!

Every day we ask our students to “write”. How often do we? Some days, the closest thing I get to “writing” is on a post-it note. The only thing I can do is make an effort to change. These entries will be reflections on the books I am reading, thoughts about the things I am learning or just comments on day to day stuff. Join me if you like, read me if you can stomach it :) comment if you have something to share. I hope you consider trying this yourself.
